| Doctors' Recommendation: |
- Mothers to breastfeed their baby for at least the first 12 months of life or as long as mutually desired
- Babies to be breastfed exclusively for the first 6 months of life
- Newborns nurse whenever they show signs of hunger (nurse on demand)
- No supplements, including water or formula, should be given to breastfeeding newborns unless there is a medical indication
|
|
| You may need to feed your baby formula part-or-full time if you: |
- need to take a medication that would pass onto the breastmilk and may be dangerous to your baby (to be sure, get clear information from doctor)
- have to work and have no time and opportunity to pump or are unable to pump enough milk for your baby
- have had significant breast surgery. Usually women with minor breast surgery (as long as the milk ducts were not cut) are still able to breastfeed their baby. In fact, breast reduction surgery typically causes the most breastfeeding problems.
- have a highly contagious disease such as HIV or tuberculosis
